IT’S TIME TO

OUR STORY

Welcome to OUR dream—Welcome to Das Driftwood Museum and Park. If you’re here today, standing on this little island in the heart of Bhagalpur’s Diara land, I can only imagine the questions swirling in your mind: How did this come to be? Why here, in the middle of nowhere? And who thought of making a park on a flood-prone island with nothing but wild grass and river driftwood?

Well, the answers lie in a very ordinary story, told by an ordinary woman with some very extraordinary dreams. We were, and still are, a simple middle-class couple. Life never gave us much, but we were always hungry—not for wealth in the way the world defines it—but for something of our own, something honest, meaningful. Something that would make people remember our name. My husband, Prantosh Kumar Das, a devoted police officer, spent most of his time in service to society. I supported from the sidelines, holding the home together, raising our children, and helping wherever I could.

The land you stand on today was once nothing but a floodplain. We started with a small dairy here—an idea born from practicality, not passion. Since my husband’s duty kept him busy, I became the one to manage it. With cows to care for, staff to manage, and children stepping into teenage chaos, life often felt like a tug-of-war. The dairy demanded more than I could give, and the burden slowly began to weigh me down. And yet, this land… it slowly took root in our hearts. It was the only piece of earth we truly owned. And no matter how tired we were, we found ourselves coming back to it. Every spare moment, every weekend, we’d visit. We began planting flowers, trees, anything green and hopeful. It was our escape, our shared sanctuary.

Then, as fate would have it, 22nd December 2015 arrived—a date etched in my soul. It was my husband’s birthday. That morning, a group of children came to the island, holding a small cake in their hands. They giggled, they played, they celebrated—not in a fancy restaurant or decorated hall, but right here, in the middle of raw, untouched nature. Something about that moment stirred me. The laughter of children against the backdrop of the Ganga, the driftwood logs lying around like forgotten sculptures, the peace of this place—it all felt… magical. That day, an idea was born. What if this land could become something more? Not a dairy. Not a commercial space. But a place of wonder. A park of nature’s art. A driftwood museum where each log told its own story. And that is how Das Driftwood Park began—humbly, honestly—with nothing but passion, second-hand tools, and a Rs. 10 entry ticket.

Over time, the park grew. Not just in size or footfalls, but in spirit. People started noticing. Sculptures formed from old driftwood, shaped only by time and the river, began to resemble animals, dancers, birds. We didn’t carve them—nature did. We just gave them a stage to stand on. We built paths. We planted trees. We painted. We polished. We poured ourselves into it. And slowly, what was once just a patch of land became a living museum—one that breathes with the river, floods every year, and yet stands tall again, just like us. Today, when I watch children laugh, or couples take photos near the giant elephant driftwood, or visitors ask me, “Did you really build all this?”, I feel a quiet pride. Not just for the park. But for the journey. For choosing to build something with love. For finding art where others saw waste. For turning driftwood into a dream. Thank you for visiting.

This isn’t just a park. It’s our story, written in mud, roots, and driftwood—one tide at a time.

NEETA DAS

The heart behind Das Driftwood Museum & Park, Neeta Das is a homemaker whose creativity gave birth to the idea of transforming a flood-prone land into an eco-friendly haven. She envisioned the park as a space where nature, art, and sustainability coexist — built entirely on a zero-waste concept using recycled and upcycled materials. From bottles and tires to everyday discarded items, her imagination turned waste into wonder.
Her thoughtful vision laid the foundation for what is now one of Bhagalpur’s most unique green spaces — a living example of how beauty can emerge from responsibility and care for the earth.

PRANTOSH KUMAR DAS

An IPS officer by profession and an artist by passion, Prantosh Kumar Das is the creative force behind the stunning driftwood sculptures that define the park. What began as a hobby became a lifelong devotion to preserving nature’s art — turning weathered logs from the Ganga into timeless forms of expression. His work reflects patience, vision, and deep respect for nature’s craftsmanship, making Das Driftwood Park not just a destination, but a story of resilience, creativity, and love for the natural world.
